A Deep Breath

Support How can we help?

A Deep Breath is intentionally small. Most questions are answered in the FAQ below. If you don't find what you need, send a note.

i.Frequently asked

How do I start a session?

Open the app. Tap the cover — it opens to a page. After a beat, a small "Tap to begin" pill fades in. Tap anywhere on the page; a three-second countdown plays, and then breathing begins. Between sessions the pill returns so you can start another whenever you're ready.

How do I stop a session?

Tap anywhere. The session ends cleanly; your page is saved.

Can I pause a session?

There's no pause. Tapping stops the session; the next tap starts a new one. If you step away mid-session and close the app, it resumes at the same page next time you open it.

Why is there no voice guide?

Because the page turn is the guide. Inhaling as the page lifts, exhaling as it settles, is enough. Adding a voice would crowd what we want to leave empty.

How do I change the book?

Settings (gear, top-left) → Reading → Book. Switch between Thoreau's Walden and Laozi's Tao Te Ching. Each book keeps its own reading position, so you can move between them freely without losing your place.

What is Quiet mode?

Settings → Reading → Mode → Quiet. A small paperback sits in the middle of the screen instead of filling it. The pages are blank (well — they have abstract line-patterns that read as prose from a distance, but there are no real words). The same breath rhythm turns the pages. For sessions when you want to breathe without reading.

How do I change the breathing pattern?

Settings → Breath → Pattern. Choose between 4-4-4-4 (box breathing) and 4-7-8 (relaxation). Settings → Breath → Cycles lets you choose 5, 10, 15, or 20 breaths per session.

Does my progress sync?

Yes, if you're signed into iCloud. The page you're on in each book is kept in sync across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac automatically.

I finished the book. What happens?

The app quietly starts over at page one — the same book rewards a second and third pass, and the same verse often lands differently the second time through. If you'd prefer a change, switch to the other book in Settings.

Is there a widget or Watch app?

Not in this version. Both are on the roadmap — a lock-screen widget showing your last-read passage, and a Watch app where a single page edge lifts and falls at wrist size.

Can I add other books?

The app ships with two: Walden and the Tao Te Ching. More public-domain titles may arrive in future updates — Epictetus' Enchiridion, Rumi quatrains, short passages of haiku — depending on what pairs well with the breath.
